LisboN and Alentejo

Lisbon

The ocean in a glass

The Lisbon Wine Region is a hidden gem on Portugal’s wine map. It is known for both Portuguese grape varieties and some famous foreign ones, but with a distinct profile – very fresh, mineral and even with a hint of salinity – thanks to its terroir and Atlantic influence.

This region is home to nine Controlled Designations of Origin (DOC), three of which are among the smallest and oldest in Portugal, making them particularly interesting both from a historical perspective and in terms of the wines’ profiles. You can taste wine made from grapes grown in pure sand, wine mentioned by Shakespeare in his play “Henry VI”, or fortified wine that was already being produced in the 14th century and later became famous thanks to the Marquis of Pombal.

Discover a somewhat underrated region that’s well worth a visit and sample some excellent wines that will surprise you.

Alentejo

The sun in a glass

Alentejo is one of Portugal’s most iconic wine-growing regions, known for its flat landscapes, cork trees, olive groves, and sun-drenched vineyards, which have become the region’s hallmark.

It comprises eight subregions with a Controlled Designation of Origin (DOC), each with its own distinct character due to their very different soils, yet united by aromatic, appealing, and highly food-friendly wines – the result of the summer heat, which is ever-present throughout the entire region.

Here, a special place is held by “talha” wine – an ancient technique, inherited from the Romans, in which the wine is fermented and aged in large clay amphorae. These wines, still produced today in some traditional Alentejo wineries, stand out for their authentic character, unique texture, and strong connection to the region’s rural culture.
